Andrew + Deborah

I’ve been away in the United States and the Cayman Islands to see my wife and to assist a good photographer friend of mine at a destination wedding respectively. You could say I’ve had a bit of a break over the past couple of weeks. One would think I’d be refreshed from such an adventure but really this isn’t the case. I feel like I need another break from the break I’ve just had. It was really exhausting. Not only do I feel burnt out but I was sunburnt on my forehead. The one place I forgot to protect against the sun was my face and I have suffered for it. I’ve certainly learnt my lesson…

Anyway, here are scenes from a recent wedding I covered earlier this year. Enjoy!

Seun + Timi – White Wedding

I’ve just recently gotten back into the swing of documenting weddings in the UK again. I normally take a wide range of focal length lenses with me, 6 in total ( 16-35mm f/2.8L, 24mm f/1.4L, 35mm f/1.4L, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4 and 70-200mm f/2.8L). This way I have a lot of options in what I can do at the wedding. Recently I’ve had 2 lenses at the shop that are being serviced and repaired. It’s good practice to send your lenses in for recalibration and general servicing as high frequency of use tends to wear them out. At the moment my 50mm and 70-200mm are both out and so I’m having to shoot all telephoto shots with the 85mm. This obviously has proven to be challenging as there are certain key shots I would have normally captured using the compression effect of shooting at 200mm.

Nonetheless, it has been really interesting having to find new ways of shooting without my standard combo of lenses. In my last event I took only 3 lenses with me (24, 35 and 85mm). I found myself having to modify and adjust my approach to capturing moments and compositions in ways I would never have had to had I been in possession of all my lenses. I think a photographer should challenge him/herself once in a while in capturing images. Always ask the question, “how can I take this shot differently with a different lens?” Or “how can I use the light differently in this moment and convey the same mood?” You will start to notice things in your pictures that you took for granted. For instance did you ever notice that the colour red is such a striking colour that if your subject was red or wore a red dress they would stand out more than any other colour in the photo? This information is really handy when your subject is not the one who’s red but the dullest colour in the frame. I noticed this once on my travels in shooting a portrait with two different lighting conditions. Think about it for a second.

In the meantime, enjoy the wedding below!

Jide, Very well documented. Ace job. Im so loving the tones of the shots in the car. Actually I feel what you are saying regarding lenses and the need to push barriers. However there are a couple of lenses I dont see myself ever leaving home without :)

Dare - May 10, 2011 - 11:09 pm

Tunde, you are doing a serious work in wedding photography I must confess

Temi Adeniranye - June 23, 2011 - 3:34 pm

Yewande + Paul | Standing in for a friend

Yewande and Paul are one of the funniest and coolest couples I’ve worked with. Atunbi, a fellow photographer who I have worked with in the past asked me to stand in for him in this photo session as he wasn’t able to cover it for them due to unforeseen circumstances. It’s always very comforting when a photographer has a network of other good photographers who can take on work on his/her behalf. I’ve found that over the years I have been blessed with photographers who understand the clients’ needs especially when it relates to wedding photography.

You’ll notice that a few shots have been inspired by Enim Photography, check out his work. Totally amazing.

Street Photography of Portobello Market – Photo Walk

Last Saturday 9 Photographers + 1 Observer met up at Portobello Road Market to go on a photo walk. This was one of the best ones I’ve attended in a while. Not only was the weather amazing, but the company, the subjects and also the food was fantastic.  I feel like a lot of other photographers missed out on this one, because we all had so much fun.

Below is a sample set of photos that I just quickly processed in Lightroom for my post today. You can view some more photos from Enimien and Ovo on their facebook links.

Bros,
Nice photo. Remind me of those time I did the same work with in this ancient side of London. I will also advise you start thinking of a focus based or story based photo walk.

Cheers

Mr Quadosh - April 11, 2011 - 11:45 am

You’ve got a really good eye!
The angles, the compositions, the post work and just the look and feel of each image is great!
You seem to ‘love’ Portobello market :) Your photo walks are usually around there.

dudu - April 11, 2011 - 7:44 pm

Omotoye + Akinleye – Engagement Ceremony

I am slowly preparing for the wedding season this year and I can’t help but wonder what kinds of weddings I’m going to be photographing. The line up of couples that have signed up with Alakija & Co. this year are very different from any other years I have done. I have a whole mix from different parts of the world with different types of ceremonies. This is something I have really sought after this year– some variation. I think the challenge disappears when the work is monotonous. But with a different kind of wedding each time, I think that is when you can truly say to yourself that you’ve have been tested.

I’m also looking forward to trying out new approaches in my style and to working with new photographers and editors. Prepare yourself for some new images!

In the meantime please enjoy this documentation!
