Tierra + Brandon – Engagement session, American Tobacco District, Durham NC

I was introduced to Brandon and Tierra through a good photographer buddy, Demi. She saw a tweet I posted last week where I was looking for engaged couples who wanted a free engagement portrait session. This was another test shoot, just as with the previous post. I had to chance to experiment in the dark using a combination of the available light and my speed light.

Tierra and Brandon are both in the area, working as an interior designer and an accountant at Ralph Lauren. These two were very easy going and really awesome people to work with. Hopefully I’ll get to work with them later next year– or at least get a clothing discount? 😉

Seyi + Stephen, Engagement session test shoot + Don’t forget to vote!

I’ve just returned from Miami after helping out my good friend Olu shoot a wedding. Needless to say, it was a great time (even bumped into my cousins) but I’m completely shattered. Thanks so much to all of you who have already voted for me for the Nigerian Blog Awards. Make sure to keep spreading the word and encourage others to support and VOTE–  voting ends on November 11th. I’ve been really touched by some of the messages I’ve seen from fans, friends, family and colleagues, including this message on Facebook from Tolani Alli:

“My mentor Jide Alakija’s photography blog was recently nominated for the best photography blog award in the 2012 Nigerian Blog Awards! I have been following Alakija’s photojournalism for years now and I’m a really big fan of his approach to photography. I personally love the wedding photography side of Alakija’s blog because of the way he captures the event. He communicates the wedding stories through his lens, allowing you to live through the special day just as it was experienced by the bride and groom. I’m ecstatic that his blog was nominated for this award and encourage you to please VOTE for him so he can win this award! I earnestly believe he deserves this title as he is extremely passionate about giving his clients, fans and faithful readers his best through his images. You too can show your encouragement by voting for him.“

Thanks for your extremely kind words, Tolani.

I had the opportunity to shoot a lovely couple who had been introduced to me by a friend in London, UK. Seyi and Stephen live in Durham, NC and are engaged to be married next year. They responded to my ad last week for a FREE engagement test photo session. We hadn’t very much time to do the shoot today but the results of what we got were pretty amazing.

Enjoy a few shots from their shoot.

Bimpe + Bona, Radisson Plaza-Warwick Hotel, Philadelphia (Preview)

We’re currently preparing for another portrait test shoot in Durham with the same sitter, Shauné. This time we want to include more of the local scenery into the portrait. The last time we did most of the images indoors. We had hoped that the weather would have been on our side but Hurricane Sandy hasn’t been as forgiving as we thought (who upset her?!). Anyway, these are the challenges I love, they really force me to think outside the box.

I’m getting set to shoot my last wedding in the States for the year in Miami over this weekend with Olumide Akintorin. I’m going to be acting as the second shooter this time. I am looking to get some very invaluable experience working with another American-based photographer.

Speaking of wedding photography, here’s a new preview from the last wedding I recently shot in Philadelphia. This was another collaborative effort with my good friend and posing master, Bandele Zuberi. Shooting with Bandele over the last few months has been nothing short an amazing experience. By combining our very different approaches to the art, we have both learned a lot from each other.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

P.S. Those wine glasses below are avatars of each of Bimpe’s bridesmaid, aren’t they so cute? Each one was hand painted by Shannon. Check out her work at

Nigerian Blog Awards 2012: We’ve been nominated! Time to VOTE!

Well guys, looks like someone out there is reading this blog, because I’ve been nominated for the Best Photography Blog for the 2012 Nigerian Blog Awards! Please be mindful of the directions– once you’ve casted your vote on the website, you will receive an e-mail confirmation with a link you will need to click to secure your vote. No e-mail, no vote!! (In other words, check your spam folder if you don’t receive anything- or try again!).

Youve got my VOTE…

Toyin + Attah – The Honourable Artillery Company, London (Preview)

This is my second wedding preview on my blog so far and from the response I got from the last one, I think I’ll be posting a lot more. Things are a bit slow at the moment (but I welcome the breather in preparation of the busy Christmas season) so some of my posts will be from other projects that are not related to weddings. Let’s see what the future holds.

Toyin and Attah are two very good friends who I happen to know from two different circles. I used to go to the same church as Toyin when I lived in London and I met Attah through my one of my best friends who went to Cambridge University with him. Covering this wedding was awesome. This was the first Nigerian wedding I had covered at Holy Trinity Brompton Church. I had never seen the church so full for a wedding ceremony–it was epic! I also had the opportunity of working with Jeffrey Osei-Tutu who was the second shooter, a photographer I have been looking to work with on a wedding for sometime.

This wedding was one of my first Autumn/Fall weddings for the year. The light during this time of the year can be very challenging in London and the fact that the ceremony took place late in the afternoon gave me very little time to play around with the couple’s formal photographs. Most of the shots shown below were lit with an external speed light.
