“Ife wa gbona” – Lovestruck #2, A shoot in collaboration with The Wedding Company

Earlier in the year we had the opportunity to work with our friends at The Wedding Company. A set of photography studios have been chosen to take part in a project called “Lovestruck”. The main idea behind the project was to “learn, share and create” with some of the amazing vendors in the wedding and event industry. We have come together as a team to collaborate with one goal in mind, “to perform at our best and produce outstanding results”. The project allows for a bit more than usual creative licence in out work.

The idea of this particular shoot was simple. Let’s all show how much these guys love each other. The shoot features Adeola and Wale who are newly weds themselves acting out a theme of a couple of rural villagers. I really enjoyed working with these guys on this project.

Special thanks to Lumi Morgan for his assistance on this shoot.

Genevieve Magazine Cover : Funmi Iyanda

It’s been a very busy and crazy couple of months. I’ve seen myself travel in between the USA, the UK and Nigeria quite a few times on all sorts of assignments. It’s been so difficult updating the blog as a result. There’s so much I want to share but very little time to put it all together in between my assignments. Don’t get me wrong… I am not complaining. It’s always a very good indication of how well your business is doing when you’re services are being sort after abroad.

We were recently given the assignment to shoot the cover for the May edition of Genevieve Magazine in Nigeria. The magazine is celebrating its 10 year anniversary and has decided to present an “Iconic” theme with it’s covers this year. Different personalities have been chosen as “icons” to represent what they have done as women in the Nigerian society. May’s edition has Funmi Iyanda, an award-winning broadcaster, journalist, columnist and blogger. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Funmi in the past and I have been meaning to do a portrait of her for sometime now. When we were asked to shoot the cover, it was a definite no-brainer.

Shooting Company Staff Profiles – No Surprises Events

We really value the relationships we have with the various clients who have utilized Alakija Studios– the relationship we’ve built with No Surprises Event Architects is no different. No Surprises Events is a dynamic event design, production and experiential marketing events agency based in Nigeria.  They create some of the most amazing corperate and entertainment events you will ever see. During one of our recent trips to Lagos, we had the pleasure of shooting the company’s staff portraits.

Our mission was to capture the uniqueness of each individual’s personalities, while maintaining a sophisticated and vibrant feel of the company as a whole. We found them to be really creative and dynamic and at the same time professional and extremely down to earth, certainly a reflection of the CEO and our friend, Funmi Victor-Okigbo.

Suffice to say, it’s always an amazing experience working with No Surprises. They’re truly setting the standard for the event production industry in Nigeria. Be sure to check them out!

Shola + Tunde, Harbour Point Event Center, Victoria Island, Lagos (preview)

Here are images from a two-day ceremony of the marriage of Shola and Tunde. I was very inspired by the few words Shola’s mother had for me after this wedding. I won’t go into too much but the long and short of it was that she was very impressed with how the Alakija Studios team managed the other photographers that were hired to shoot the event with us. As some of you know usually there are more than one photography company hired to cover a wedding ceremony in Nigeria. Each company is individually hired to focus on different “personalities” of the wedding. So for example, you’ll have a company hired to focus on the groom’s family, another for the bride’s family, one more for the couple and their friends (this is the group we often fall into), etc. You can imagine how easy it is for all these photographers to get in each other’s way. I know part of the stress on the couple getting married in Nigerian weddings can occur as a result of the seemingly endless attention each photographer requires of the couple. As one who has gone through it myself, it can be very annoying. We devised a system where we compose the posed shots (especially during the formal order of photos) of the couple so that ALL the photographers can take photos without having to put pressure on the couple. Using this method has relieved a lot of stress on our clients.

I really enjoyed shooting this one with Lumi Morgan as the main second photographer. Special thanks also to Michael and Tunde who joined us in covering this event.

Aisha, A pregnancy portrait

I’m about to do a whole load of travelling over the next couple of months and therefore see the need to update the blog now before I forget. During my last visit to Lagos on some wedding photography assignments, I had the pleasure of photographing one of my dearest friends and inspirations. I met Aisha Augie-Kuta early last year in London while she was on holiday with her family. We instantly clicked on the first day and became very good friends since then. She’s an amazing photographer based in Abuja, Nigeria. I really love her work and in particular her documentary photos of life in the northern part of Nigeria.

I have photographed her here while she was 6 months pregnant with her third child. Yes, she’s done so much for someone who has had two kids already. She was such a joy to photograph. Aisha has such a quirky sense of humour that I found myself laughing in stitches throughout the shoot.
